Valerie Stone, PhD, (Ph.D., Stanford, 1990; B.A. Harvard, 1985) left a comfortable tenured position in academia to take science “out of the lab and into the streets” as an advocate for the rights of people with neurological disabilities. She is a scientific expert on decision-making capacity, how brain-based disorders make people vulnerable to exploitation, and the social and cognitive consequences of dementia, brain injury, and developmental disabilities, having published numerous scientific articles on these topics. She is currently Director of Continuing Education at Answers About Competency LLC (www.AboutCompetency.com), serves on the board of the Guardianship Alliance of Colorado, and co-facilitates the Denver Brain Injury Professionals Network of the CO Brain Injury Alliance. She has served on the faculties of the U. of Denver, U. of Colorado, UC Santa Barbara, and U. of Queensland, Australia, as well as doing postdoctoral research at Cambridge, UC Davis, and the U. of Michigan.
