Cara J. Sweet

1st Judicial District
The Honorable Cara Sweet was appointed as a District Court Magistrate in Jefferson County in March 2024 and currently handles a diversified docket including domestic relations, child support enforcement, paternity, truancy, juvenile delinquency/ detentions, and temporary and permanent civil protection orders.  Prior to taking the bench, Magistrate Sweet served as an Assistant County Attorney in Jefferson County from 2020-2024 (handling primarily Dependency and Neglect cases) and prior to that was the Director of Professional Development for the Attorney General's Office from 2018 until 2020, where she provided the training curriculum for all staff and served as counsel on various civil trials including tort, employment discrimination and constitutional law violation claims. From 2007 until 2018, Magistrate Sweet served as a Deputy District Attorney and Senior Deputy District Attorney in the 18th Judicial District- over her time in the DA's office she handled general misdemeanor, juvenile and felony cases until she entered the Special Victim's Unit in 2011.  During her time in the special victim's unit she focused on child sex assault and child abuse resulting in death, and in 2015 she started the office's specialized Human Trafficking Unit.  Over her career she has earned many awards for her service and litigation skills. Magistrate Sweet has trained around the state and country on trial skills and issues affecting families in crisis, including most recently at the Family Law Institute 2024 conference on the topic of Cross Examination Skills.
