Richard A. Shapack is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Harvard University Graduate School of Business and Catholic University Columbus School of Law.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and, since 1983, has been certified by the Florida Bar as a Board Certified Tax Lawyer.   As a principal with the law firm of Shapack Law Group, PLC in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, his practice is concentrated in business law, real estate and estate planning with special emphasis on tax and business planning.  In 2006, he was named in the first listing of Michigan Super-Lawyers and has been named again each year thereafter.  In 2011, the Florida Bar appointed him to the Tax Certification Committee, which writes and grades the annual tax certification exams and served on that committee for six years.  He has been a speaker at numerous ABA Real Property Section and Tax Section meetings, as well as Michigan Bar meetings, the Michigan Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the Tax Management Advisory Board, the BNA Law Education Institute National Law Conference (where for many years he chaired the Tax Law Program and now co-chairs the Business Law Program) and the NYU Real Estate Institute.  From 2001 to 2004, he served on the Harvard Business School Alumni Association Board of Directors and in January 2013 was named to the Board of Visitors for the Catholic University Columbus School of Law.  Mr. Shapack serves on the BNA Tax Management Real Estate Advisory Board, the Professional Advisory Board for the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and several non-profit boards as well as having previously served on the boards of Michigan Heritage Bank and GT Canada Medical Properties REIT.  In addition to the practice of law, for over thirty-five years he has been actively involved in the acquisition, development, ownership and management of real estate ventures. RSM Development and Management owns and operates approximately one million square feet of commercial properties in southeastern Michigan.  On a personal level, he spent eleven years on active duty in the Navy serving on nuclear submarines and at the Navy Strategic Systems Project Office.
