Richard Rainey is a partner in the Washington, DC office of Covington & Burling LLP. Mr. Rainey specializes in trials and appeals of intellectual property disputes, including patent infringement cases, trade secret disputes, and cybersecurity threats, in diverse technological areas across many industries. As a registered patent attorney, he also has substantial experience in matters before the USPTO including various post-grant review proceedings such as IPRs. Mr. Rainey has been lead counsel in a number of high profile patent infringement cases including cases before district courts (both bench and jury trials) and the International Trade Commission (“ITC”) under Section 337 (for both complainants and respondents). He has been involved in more than 50 appeals in patent cases to the Federal Circuit. Among his appellate matters, Mr. Rainey obtained reversal of an $85 million judgment and permanent injunction against Thomson Reuters. See MuniAuction, Inc. v. Thomson Corp., 532 F.3d 1318 (Fed. Cir. 2008). He is also a co-author of Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit: Practice and Procedure.  Prior to rejoining Covington, Mr. Rainey served for three and a half years in GE's Corporate legal department as GE's Global Chief IP Litigator and head of GE's Intellectual Property Litigation Center of Excellence, which had world-wide responsibility for GE's IP disputes. During his time with GE, Mr. Rainey oversaw GE's multi-jurisdictional patent dispute with one of its largest competitors, which included the largest patent jury verdict for GE in its history. Before entering private practice, he served as a law clerk to Judge McKelvie at the District of Delaware and Chief Judge Rader at the Federal Circuit.  He graduated with High Honors from the George Washington University Law School, where he was a Senior Editor of The George Washington Law Review and member of the Order of the Coif.  Mr. Rainey also holds an undergraduate degree in engineering from MIT.
