Joseph Sowell is Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer of Nashville, Tennessee-based HCA, the nation's leading provider of healthcare services. His responsibilities include all development functions and transactions related to HCA's investment in or acquisition or divestiture of any business, including hospitals, outpatient centers, and physician practices. Sowell is also responsible for real estate development. Sowell joined HCA December 1, 2009. Prior to joining HCA, Sowell was a partner at Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis where he practiced in the areas of healthcare law, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, private equity financing, tax law and general corporate law and co-managed the firm's Corporate and Commercial Transactions practice. Sowell has led numerous large health care transactions. Sowell is an active supporter of numerous Nashville charitable and nonprofit organizations, including St. Luke's Community House and Room In the Inn - Campus for Human Development. Sowell earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama in 1978 and his law degree from the University of Alabama in 1981. He also has a master of laws degree, which he earned from the University of Florida in 1982. Mr. Sowell is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Health Law Committee of the Nashville Bar Association. He and his wife Joanne reside in Nashville and have two children.
