The Honorable Michael A. Kirtland (ret.), is a retired Administrative Law Judge for the State of Colorado.  In that capacity he handled Colorado Medicaid appeals.  Previously, he was a member in the law firm of Kirtland & Seal L.L.C., in Colorado Springs, where he limited his practice to the areas of estate planning, wills and trusts, probate, elder law and mediation.  He is a member of the American Bar Association's Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section, where he is the past-chair of the Section's Elder Law, Disability Planning and Bioethics Group and served as the Section liaison to the ABA's Senior Lawyers Division. He is also a former Council Member for the Senior Lawyers Division.  In the Colorado Bar Association he served as chair of the CBA's Joint Task Force on Advance Health Care Directives, and as chair of the Elder Law Section.  He is also a member of the Colorado Bar Association's Ethics Committee.  He has served as chair of the Judicial Performance Commission for Colorado's Fourth Judicial District.   He has published numerous articles in a variety of legal publications, as well as co-authoring Getting Started with Advance Directives, with Donna Jackson, published by the ABA.  Mr. Kirtland received a B.A. degree from Coe College, an M.P.A. degree (summa cum laude) from the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs.  He received his law degree (magna cum laude) from Faulkner University's Jones School of Law and an LL.M. in taxation from the University of Alabama School of Law.  Mr. Kirtland is licensed to practice law in both Alabama and Colorado.  He is admitted to the United States Supreme Court, the United States Tax Court,  the United States Courts of Appeals for the Tenth and Eleventh Circuits, as well as the Federal District Courts for the Middle District of Alabama and for the District of Colorado.  He is a Certified Elder Law Attorney, Emeritus, as designated by the National Elder Law Foundation.
