Sueanna P. Johnson

The Honorable Sueanna P. Johnson was appointed to the Colorado Court of Appeals on December 2, 2019, and sworn in February 13, 2020. She serves as co-chair of the Court's internal Court Community Committee and is a member of the Learning Center Committee, which is updating the technology and exhibits for the learning center located at the Ralph L. Carr Judicial Center. She also participates in the Lorenzo Márquez externship program by sponsoring a diverse law student extern every spring semester. Outside of the Court, she serves on the Board for the Colorado Judicial Institute; is part of a four-member mentor team for a college student through Judge Christine Arguello's Law School Yes We Can Program; and is a Pupilage Leader for the Thompson and Lucy Marsh Inn of Court. She is an active member of the Colorado Asian Pacific American Bar Association. She is also working with lawyers and judicial officers to establish the Colorado Disability Bar Association, a specialty bar association for lawyers with disabilities. Before her appointment to the bench, she was employed with the Colorado Attorney General's Office from 2004-2019 and clerked for the Honorable John W. Coughlin in the Second Judicial District from 2003-2004. She obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2003 and earned her B.A. in Political Science from Colorado College in 1997. During her junior year in college, she studied abroad at the University of Manchester in Manchester, England. As a person with albinism with a visual impairment, she is a member of the National Organization of Albinism and Hypopigmentation. For that organization, she speaks to parents who have children with albinism, and was a featured adult in the book Raising a Child with Albinism: A Guide to the School Years. Judge Johnson was born in Seoul, South Korea and adopted when she was three years old. She is married with two school-aged children.
