Peter C. Guthery

Peter C. Guthery, Esq. retired on May 9, 2012 after 51 years in the practice of law. At the time of his retirement, he was a shareholder in the Denver law firm of Berenbaum Weinshienk PC. His practice was limited to the representation of nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. Peter is an inactive member of the Colorado, Virginia, and New York state bars. He holds a B.A. degree from Columbia College of Columbia University, an LL.B. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, and an LL.M. degree (in taxation) from the New York University School of Law. He is a Fellow in the American College of Tax Counsel.
 
He is a past chair of the TE/GE (Tax Exempt and Governmental Entities) Council for the 14-state Central Mountain Area of the Internal Revenue Service. He is a past chair of the Colorado Bar Association's Section on Taxation. Peter is a former adjunct professor of Tax Exempt Organizations in the Graduate Tax Program of the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. He served on the planning committee and chaired the Annual Institute on Advising Nonprofit Organizations in Colorado for Continuing Legal Education in Colorado from 1990 through 2010. He is a past chair of the Colorado Bar Association's Business Law Section's Nonprofit Entity Subsection and the Nonprofit Corporation Act Statutory Revision Committee, and was also a member of the Section's Revised Nonprofit Corporation Act Statutory Revisions Committee. He has lectured and continues to lecture and has written extensively on matters involving nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. Peter has been listed among “The Best Lawyers in America” since 1989 and was listed as a “Super Lawyer” in 2009, 2010, and 2011.
