18th Judicial District
The Honorable H. Clay Hurst was appointed to the 18th Judicial District Court Bench as a District Magistrate on January 7, 2013. He was a Domestic Relations Magistrate in Arapahoe County for 2 ½ years, County and District Court Magistrate for Douglas and Arapahoe Counties from January 2015 until July 1, 2016, when he returned to Arapahoe County as the District Court Probate and Mental Health Magistrate where he served until December 31, 2019. As of January 1, 2020, Judge Hurst was appointed by the Governor of Colorado to the 18th Judicial District Court Bench as a District Court Judge. From January 1, 2020, until August 1, 2024, Judge Hurst sat as the Presiding District Court Judge of Lincoln County and the Presiding Probate and Mental Health Judge for Douglas County rotating every other week between those two counties. As of August 1, 2024, Judge Hurst rotated back to Arapahoe County and is the Presiding Probate and Mental Health Judge for the 18th Judicial District. He is a native of Colorado, graduated from Metropolitan State College in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice and received his Juris Doctorate from the Denver University College of Law in 1996. Prior to being appointed to the Bench he owned and operated his law firm, H. Clay Hurst & Associates, P.C., which specialized in representing parties in the 18th Judicial District on Family Law, Juvenile, Probate, Trust and Estate and Civil matters. He was also a municipal prosecutor, Guardian ad Litem, Child and Family Investigator and represented indigent parties as Court Appointed Counsel in Contempt of Court and Dependency and Neglect matters. He also served 14 years on the Town of Elizabeth Board of Trustees from 2004-2018 with his last 8 years being the acting Mayor of the Town of Elizabeth as a non-partisan position.
