Penfield W. Tate III is the founder of Tate Law with over forty years of experience in small, mid-sized, national, and international law firms. His client-centered, problem-solving approach to the practice has been focused on serving governments in public finance and municipal law for more than 35 years and on serving people in corporate and business matters and wills, estates, trust, and wealth preservation. Being a lawyer is not all there is to Penfield. His broader experience and background molds and shapes his Firm's approach to representing clients. Penfield has always been involved in the fabric of the community serving on countless boards and volunteering his time in the community. In addition, learning from his father, Penfield II, who was a City Councilman in Boulder and was Boulder's first and only African American Mayor, Penfield has served the community in a more formal capacity. He served as an aide to former Denver Mayor Federico Peña, representing the Mayor on issues involving airport finance, small business and economic development, and housing development. Penfield served in the cabinet of former Colorado Governor Roy Romer as Executive Director of the Department of Administration. Penfield later served over six years in the Colorado General Assembly, four years in the House as the State Representative for District 8 and over two years in the Senate as the State Senator for District 33. Penfield has been a frequent panelist on a local political commentary television program and is an award-winning political columnist for a local newspaper. He remains a frequent speaker and presenter on a variety of occasions. Penfield earned a bachelor's degree from Colorado State University and his J.D. from Antioch School of Law. He is married with an adult daughter with special needs. In his spare time, he enjoys working out, watching sporting events, scuba diving, fly fishing and going to movies.
