Joanne Underhill, Esq., focuses her practice on business transactions, tax problems and governance issues, including disputes among the owners of a business. She has advised hundreds of Colorado businesses and their owners for over two decades and has represented clients large and small in lawsuits and administrative agency proceedings for 40 years. Having represented business owners in misclassification audits conducted by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment and Internal Revenue Service, Joanne counsels' clients on misclassification issues and drafts or improves their independent contractor agreements, as well as other contracts. Ms. Underhill was admitted to practice law in Colorado in 1987. Before then, she practiced in a Big Law firm and a federal banking agency in Washington, D.C and spent a few years on the staffs of a U.S. Senator and a Congressman before law school. She has been accredited by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) since 1998 to represent taxpayers to the Service. She was one of the first women undergraduates at Yale University, where she received her undergraduate degree. She received her law degree from the American University Washington College of Law. Ms. Underhill was named a Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts Mile Hi Council and is recognized in Who's Who in American Law. She received the National Honor Award from Girl Scouts U.S.A. for her service to Girl Scouting in Colorado. Ms. Underhill served for nine years by gubernatorial appointment as a Public Member of the Colorado State Board of Accountancy. She chaired the Greenwood Village Parks, Trails and Recreation Commission for three years and served as a Commission member for many more. Under her leadership, the City of Greenwood Village developed its Open Space Plan, acquired land for open space throughout the City during the 1990s, and developed Silo Park and the award-winning Westlands Park. Ms. Underhill co-founded Girl Scouts Mile Hi Council's Women's Leadership Circle and co-chaired its inaugural Women of Distinction dinner.  She was a troop leader with her husband for her daughter's Cadette and Senior Girl Scout Troops and was active for many years in her son's Boy Scout troop.
