University of Denver Sturm College of LawAlan Chen is the William M. Beaney Memorial Research Chair and Professor of Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, where he teaches constitutional law and federal courts. His research interests include free speech doctrine and theory, federal remedies for civil rights violations, and cause lawyering. His scholarly work has been published in many leading journals, including the Michigan Law Review, Iowa Law Review, Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review, Hastings Law Journal, and Emory Law Journal. He is the co-author of Public Interest Lawyering: A Contemporary Perspective (2013). Before joining the Sturm College of Law, Chen was a staff attorney with the ACLU's Chicago office, where he litigated cases concerning the First Amendment, police misconduct, and privacy rights. He continues to be actively engaged in pro bono work.
