Denis K. Lane, Jr., is an attorney who has been practicing mental health law and civil litigation in the District of Columbia and the State of Colorado, beginning in 1978. Mr. Lane received an M.A. in counseling from the University of Oklahoma, prior to attending law school at O.U. While working as an attorney for the District of Columbia, he represented St. Elizabeth's Hospital in landmark litigation involving the rights of adolescents, and also handled mental health commitments, special education litigation, and defense of malpractice litigation on behalf of the District and the Metropolitan Police Department in federal court. Mr. Lane has been practicing in Colorado since 1982, when he served as a Deputy District Attorney for the 4th Judicial District, prosecuting cases involving child abuse, neglect, and other crimes, and also handling mental health certifications. From 1986 to 1995, Mr. Lane was a litigator at Hall & Evans, LLP, where he served on the Management Committee for three years, and represented the State of Colorado, municipalities, county governments, state agencies, and public officials in litigation involving civil rights, governmental immunity, defense of malpractice claims, and mental health issues.
He has been a frequent lecturer and author on legal and ethical standards for mental health professionals. Mr. Lane is author of the Legal Guide for Practicing Psychotherapy in Colorado and the Legal and Ethical Guide for Mental Health Professionals.
