Gregory G. Lyman

Honorable Chief Judge Gregory G. Lyman has been a district Judge in the 6th JD since 1996, and has been the Chief Judge there since 1998.  He grew up in the Chicago area, began his college studies at the University of Wisconsin, and ultimately graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle.  He was a competitive speedskater from a young age, and he interrupted his college studies to pursue that career.  He ultimately made the U.S. Olympic Team and competed at the Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan, in 1972.  Shortly after that he married his wife Patty, finished up his degree in economics, and moved to Colorado to attend law school at the University of Colorado.  He graduated and was admitted to the bar in 1979.  He started his career in Brighton as a law clerk for Hon. Dorothy Binder.  Thereafter he took a job as a deputy D.A. in Gunnison, then a job as a deputy D.A. in Durango.  From 1985-88 he worked at a law firm in Wheatland, Wyoming, and then from 1988-92 at a firm in Durango.  In 1992 he was elected D.A. in the 6th Judicial District, and was appointed to his present job by Governor Romer near the end of his first term.  He and his wife Patty and have two sons and a daughter, all grown, and after all those years fretting about them having children too soon, they are ready for some grandchildren.
