John A. Jostad

Bringing Justice Home, Crossroads Safehouse
Magistrate John Jostad graduated from Bemidji State University, Bemidji, MN, with a degree in History and Social Studies in 1977, and he graduated from the University of Denver, College of Law, in 1982.  He was sworn in as a Magistrate in Larimer County in August of 2004, and he is presently a district court magistrate presiding over virtually every new divorce case that is filed in the 8th Judicial District.  Magistrate Jostad presently has about 700 open divorce cases. Magistrate Jostad also received his Master's degree in religion from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver.  In seminary, his studies focused upon Justice and Peace studies and spiritual development.  These studies have certainly influenced his perspective in the challenges faced by unrepresented litigants in DR cases, and their need for objective, competent representation.  In addition, Magistrate Jostad has been an active member on the CBA Ethics Committee since 1986, and has served as Chair of the Committee, 2000-2001. During his tenure as a Magistrate, Magistrate Jostad has presided over hundreds of DR cases with unrepresented litigants.  These cases present significant challenges to every judicial officer.  Expansion of the availability of unbundled legal services and limited representation is an opportunity to provide needed legal services to more of these unrepresented litigants.
