Ronald M. Sandgrund has extensive experience litigating construction defect and materials, product liability, multi-family community, class action, and insurance coverage and bad faith lawsuits. He was designated as Best Lawyers© “Lawyer of the Year - Construction Litigation - Denver,” for 2013 and 2019. Mr. Sandgrund has been appointed as class counsel in nine cases, including one of the largest residential homeowner class actions ever certified and tried to a jury verdict, and he negotiated the settlement of the Oldach/Outlook Windows consolidated class actions on behalf of over 30,000 Colorado homeowners. Mr. Sandgrund also was the lead negotiator on behalf of over 25,000 Colorado homeowners for a class action settlement with Richmond Homes. Mr. Sandgrund was managing principal for the Denver law firm Sullan2, Sandgrund, Perczak & Nuss, P.C. from 1990 until 2008, and remains Of Counsel following that firm's merger with Burg, Simpson, Eldredge, Hersh & Jardine, P.C. in 2014. Mr. Sandgrund lectures to attorneys, law and construction management students, and insurance company personnel on insurance and construction defect liability issues, and he regularly authors articles on insurance and construction law, as well as educational materials for new lawyers. His Residential Construction Law in Colorado, co-authored with Valerie Sullan and Leslie Tuft, received the 2011 National Award of Professional Excellence from the Association for Continuing Legal Education. Many journal articles authored or co-authored by Mr. Sandgrund were chosen to be republished nationwide between 2004 and 2024 in the Legal Handbook for Architects, Engineers and Contractors: Issues in Construction and Technology (Albert Dib, ed., Thompson-Reuters Publishing) as reflecting “cutting-edge thinking” in construction law. Mr. Sandgrund also co-authored with Valerie Sullan and Leslie Tuft “Class Counsel's Professional Responsibilities,” a chapter in the legal ethics treatise Lawyers' Professional Liability in Colorado: Preventing Legal Malpractice and Disciplinary Actions (Michael Mihm, ed., CLE in Colo., Inc. 2018). Mr. Sandgrund's writings have been referred to in many Colorado and Tenth Circuit appellate court opinions and in various treatises and law journal articles. Mr. Sandgrund also authors the InQuiring Lawyer column for the Colorado Lawyer, which looks behind the scenes of modern legal practice. His Ethics of Preparing a Witness to Testify is a favorite interactive exercise at Colorado Law, and he has also funded multiple environmental legal fellowships at the University of Colorado.
