Stanley L. Garnett, Esq., was elected as the District Attorney for Boulder County in November, 2008. Before he assumed the position of District Attorney, he was a trial lawyer for 22 years at the firm Brownstein, Hyatt, Farber and Schreck. Mr. Garnett specialized in complex litigation at the state and federal level, and has appeared before the United States Supreme Court, the 10th and 11th Circuit Courts of Appeal, the Colorado Appellate Courts and in state and federal trial courts across the United States. District Attorney Garnett is a long-time Boulder resident. His father graduated from Boulder High School in 1943 and Mr. Garnett graduated from Fairview High School in 1974. He then received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978 from the University of Colorado, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and his Juris Doctor degree in 1982 from the University of Colorado. From 1982 to 1986, he was a Deputy District Attorney in the Denver District Attorney's Office. Mr. Garnett was elected in 1997 and 2001 to the Boulder Valley School Board, serving as president of the Board during his final term in that office. Mr. Garnett is well-known in the legal community as a top-level trial lawyer, and has received a number of distinctions from the legal community during his years in private practice. During his tenure as District Attorney, Mr. Garnett has focused efforts on prosecuting economic crimes, crimes in the immigrant and homeless communities, and cold case homicide investigations. He has established priorities in the Office on prosecuting violent and recidivist offenders, especially those who present a threat to public safety, as well as outreach to more vulnerable populations such as the elderly. Since 2012, Mr. Garnett has served on the Board of Directors of the National District Attorney's Association and has been very involved in promoting Restorative Justice and other progressive Criminal Justice reforms in Colorado, especially in the area of Juvenile Jurisprudence. He is an outspoken opponent of the Death Penalty and speaks frequently about best practices in the Criminal Justice system. In 2017, Mr. Garnett was elected as President of Colorado District Attorneys Council.
