Program Description

Few people in the state are aware that there is an immigration detention facility in Aurora, Colorado. Although the court there processes nearly three thousand cases a year, the vast majority of those cases involve only one attorney, a representative of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). There is no guarantee of representation for individuals in immigration court, so the adversarial process most often involves a DHS government attorney against an individual with a limited understanding of US immigration laws. Last year, 85% of those individuals fighting their cases fought them alone. This program will provide instruction in the fundamentals of representing detained non-citizens in immigration proceedings. We will cover the basics of immigration court procedure, common forms of relief and the often unique ethical issues presented by these cases. We invite attorneys, paralegals, and law students to attend the program at a reduced rate in exchange for accepting, or assisting with, one pro bono case during the upcoming year. Please note that employees of nonprofit agencies must accept or assist in a case if they attend the program at the reduced rate. Pro bono cases will be referred after preliminary screening and evaluation. RMIAN’s staff and Board will be available as mentors throughout the course of the immigration proceedings. We hope that you will participate in this valuable opportunity to work with clients who truly need and appreciate your assistance. The Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN) represents detained indigent and lowincome non-citizens in connectionwith immigration proceedings. RMIAN operates a system of intake, evaluation, and case referral; recruits, trains, and mentors pro bono attorneys who represent detainees; and conducts legal orientation presentations at the detention facility. RMIAN is a non-profit corporation, qualified under Section 501(C)(3) of the
Internal Revenue Code as a taxexempt corporation.
