Program Description
With the rapid growth of the elderly population, there has been a proliferation of guardianship, conservatorship and other protective proceeding cases. In many instances, the court appoints a Guardian ad Litem and orders the parties to mediate. Come hear about the use of GALs, how these cases are impacted by Colo.R.P.C. 1.14 and how mediation can positively impact the outcome.

Martha L. Ridgway, Esq., focuses her practice on the positive and restorative aspects of the law, and she is devoted to assisting the elderly, the disabled, and their families. Her practice includes mediation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, particularly in probate litigation and other contested elder law matters; representing, advising, and consulting with guardians, conservators, personal representatives, agents, and other fiduciaries; serving as an expert witness in probate, elder law, and public benefits; advising and consulting with lawyers in probate and elder law matters; and general elder law. Martha is frequently appointed as guardian ad litem for disabled adults in contested probate, domestic relations and PI cases.
Martha was a co-founder and the first co-chairperson of the Colorado Bar Association Elder Law Committee (now Section), and is considered one of the pioneers of elder law in Colorado. She is a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education programs on issues affecting the elderly and disabled, as well as making regular presentations to the public. She has published two articles in The Colorado Lawyer and is a contributing author to The Lawyers' Professional Liability Handbook and the Elder Law in Colorado, both published by CLE in Colorado, Inc. Martha has received a number of awards for her pro bono and volunteer work with the elderly and disabled.
