Program Description:
 
The author will read from two courtroom scenes set in Pakistan's civil and Shariah courts and discuss issues raised by her novel, My Sisters Made of Light (Press 53, 2010).   My Sisters Made of Light is a compelling, heartbreaking, and sometimes terrifying look into the social, political, and religious maze that is Pakistan. Books will be available for purchase and the author will be happy to sign them. Half of her proceeds from book sales are donated for the construction of a shelter in Pakistan for women with children who are escaping dangerous situations.
 
Discussion topics will include:
- Pakistan's Lawyers' Movement
- Honor Crimes-Pakistan's legal system response
- Images of lawyers opposing the firing of the Chief Justice by former President Pervez Musharaff and related photographs of Pakistan

About the Faculty:
 
Jacqueline St. Joan is a retired lawyer, county judge, and law professor.  Much of her legal career was dedicated to domestic violence law reform.  She was a co-founder of Project Safeguard, a domestic violence advocacy organization; she was the first presiding judge in Denver's Protective Orders Court; and she led the Battered Women's Clemency Project at University of Denver where she was director of Clinical Programs.    
 
Jacqueline St. Joan is an award-winning author.  She holds a Masters in English (Creative Writing) from the University of Colorado and has published a wide variety of poetry, nonfiction, and fiction. She is co-editor of the anthology, Beyond Portia: Women, Law, and Literature in the United States (Northeastern UP, 1997).
 
My Sisters Made of Light, her first novel, was a finalist for the 2011 Colorado Book Award in Literary Fiction and was selected as a book of the month by the American Association of University Women.  For more information please visit Mysistersmadeoflight.com and jacquelinestjoan.com.
