Program Description:
 
A panel discussion of the history, development, and issues raised by Colorado Rule of Professional Conduct 1.6, "Confidentiality of Information," including a discussion of its scope, application, exceptions, and comparisons to other rules concerning attorney-client communication. The panel will address the ultimate issue raised by the rule: Whether it is unconstitutional-and thus no rule at all-under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the Colorado Supreme Court's Foster case.

About the Faculty:
 
George S. Meyer
Law Office of George S. Meyer
 
George S. Meyer has been an attorney in private practice at The Law Office of George Meyer in Denver since 1995, where he has been counsel, an advisor, and an expert witness for attorneys involved in the disciplinary system.
 
He received his J.D. from Hastings College of Law in San Francisco in 1976 and his LL.M. in taxation from the University of Denver in 1985. From 1982 to 1990 he was a deputy disciplinary prosecutor, and was special counsel for the Commission on Judicial Discipline from 1983 to 1990. He has also worked as a staff attorney for the Federal Trade Commission and an Assistant Attorney General in civil litigation.
 
Mr. Meyer has been AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell. He has been a CLE instructor for many ethics programs in Colorado and for the National Association of Bar Counsel since 1986. He is also a member of the Faculty of Federal Advocates.
 
 
Cynthia Covell
Alperstein & Covell PC
 
Cynthia F. Covell graduated from the University of Colorado in 1974 and from the University of Denver College of Law in 1977.  She has been a director and shareholder of Alperstein & Covell P.C. in Denver since 1985.  Her practice emphasizes water rights matters, representing municipalities, non-profit organizations, individuals and businesses in the acquisition, transfer, sale, change and adjudication of water rights and water supplies, and in administrative proceedings regarding water matters. Ms. Covell has been a member of the CBA Ethics Committee since 1986, has chaired that committee, and is a member of the Colorado Supreme Court Standing Committee on the Rules of Professional Conduct.  She is also a member of the Colorado Supreme Court's Attorney Regulation Advisory Committee, and a member of the Court's hearing board panel for disciplinary cases.  Ms. Covell lectures frequently on ethics matters, particularly as they relate to water and natural resource law practices.
 
 
Michael Gross
Michael D. Gross, P.C.
 
Michael Gross defended his first lawyer in a grievance proceeding in January, 1977. It has been a significant part of his practice since then, and, beginning in 1986, attorney ethics matters have constituted approximately 90% of his annual billable hours.
 
He was President of the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers, a 600 member national organization of grievance defense lawyers, ethics professors, legal malpractice lawyers, and risk management lawyers, from 2010-2011. He has lectured extensively, nationwide, on all aspects of the Rules of Professional Conduct. He has a Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating of “AV - Preeminent.”
